Lượng từ (Quantities): Kiến thức tinh gọn và 2 ghi nhớ nhanh giúp làm bài tập chính xác

Many – much – few – a few – little – a little – some – none…được gọi là Lượng từ – Quantities, và mỗi lượng từ mang sắc thái và mức độ khác nhau.

Khi muốn nói “Tôi chỉ còn một chút thời gian thôi”, câu tiếng Anh nào nghe hợp lý?

  • “I have a few time”, hay
  • “I have little times?”

Nghe qua thì cả hai câu đều có vẻ đúng, nhưng cách diễn đạt chính xác phải là: I have a little time hoặc I have little time.

Và hai câu này khác nhau lại còn khác nhau ở chỗ:

  • a little time = còn một chút, vẫn làm kịp
  • little time = rất ít, gần như không đủ thời gian.

Lưu ý về lượng từ a few và a little với few và little

  • Few rooms have such good natural light. (Nghĩa tiêu cực: Rất ít, hầu như không có)

Gần như không có phòng nào có ánh sáng tự nhiên tốt.

  • We have a few rooms available with a sea view.(Nghĩa khẳng định: Một số lượng nhỏ, nhưng có)

Chúng tôi có một vài phòng nhìn ra biển.

  • Little research has been done in this area. (Nghĩa tiêu cực: Rất ít, hầu như không có.)

Gần như không có nghiên cứu nào được thực hiện trong lĩnh vực này.

  • A little research has already been carried out in this area.(Nghĩa khẳng định: Một số lượng nhỏ, nhưng có.)

Đã có một chút nghiên cứu được tiến hành trong lĩnh vực này.

Bước 1: Nhìn danh từ

  • Đếm được (apple, car, chair, book…)
  • Không đếm được (water, money, information, time…) 

Bước 2: Chọn ý bạn muốn nói

  • Nhiều:

    • many: Đếm được
    • much: Không đếm được

  • Ít mà vẫn còn

    • a few: Đếm được
    • a little: Không đếm được

  • Ít gần như không

    • few: Đếm được
    • little: Không đếm được

***1 mẹo “cứu hộ” nếu muốn nói “nhiều” mà sợ nhầm → dùng a lot of vì nó áp dụng được cho cả danh từ đếm được và không đếm được

Tìm lỗi sai về lượng từ

(4) Sai: a few rain → Đúng: a little rain. Rain không đếm được → a little. (5) Sai: many patience → Đúng: much patience. Patience không đếm được → much. (6) Sai: amount of emails → Đúng: number of emails. Emails đếm được → number of.
(7) Sai: number of traffic → Đúng: amount of traffic. Traffic không đếm được → amount of. (8) Sai: a number of information → Đúng: an amount of / a lot of information. Information không đếm được. (9) Sai: number of time → Đúng: amount of time. Time không đếm được → amount of.
