Phrasal Verbs: Lý thuyết dễ hiểu và Bài tập nắm vững kiến thức

Phrasal verb là cụm động từ, thường được dùng trong tiếng Anh giao tiếp, bao gồm:

Động từ đi chung với một từ khác phía sau, tạo ra nghĩa mới.

Ví dụ:

    • look + after = look after → chăm sóc
    • turn + on = turn on → bật
    • give + up = give up → từ bỏ
    • wake + up = wake up → thức dậy

Cách sử dụng và bài tập Phrasal Verbs

Phrasal verb có 2 kiểu nghĩa chính:

1. Nghĩa dễ hiểu

Có thể hiểu gần giống nghĩa gốc của động từ.

He sat down on the chair → Cậu ấy ngồi xuống ghế.

      • sit = ngồi
      • down = xuống

2. Nghĩa bóng

Khi ghép thêm từ phía sau, cụm động từ sẽ tạo ra nghĩa hoàn toàn mới.

She gave up smoking → Cô ấy đã từ bỏ việc hút thuốc.

      • give = đưa
      • up = lên

Tuy nhiên ở đây, give up không phải là “đưa lên” mà là “từ bỏ / bỏ cuộc”

Vì vậy, với nghĩa bóng, bạn không nên dịch từng chữ mà cần học cả cụm.

Phrasal verb được đánh giá cao trong giao tiếp và các bài thi Speaking vì cách nói tự nhiên hơn.

Lưu ý:

Phrasal Verbs chỉ dùng khi bạn nói chuyện vui vẻ hàng ngày với bạn bè, bố mẹ thôi nha! Còn khi viết văn trên lớp, đi thi, hoặc nói chuyện với thầy hiệu trưởng, với sếp thì không nên dùng đâu nhé!

Hai loại Phrasal Verbs

Separable Phrasal Verb

(có thể tách rời)

 Động từ và từ phía sau có thể đứng cạnh nhau hoặc tách ra.

Lưu ý: 

Nếu tân ngữ là đại từ (him, her, it, them…) thì phải đặt ở giữa.

 They called off the meeting.

They called the meeting off.

  • Đúng: They called it off. 
  • Sai: They called off it.
  • bring up → nhắc đến chủ đề
  • fill in → điền thông tin
  • pick up → đón ai đó
  • turn down → từ chối
Non-separable Phrasal Verb

(không thể tách rời)

 Động từ và từ phía sau luôn đi cùng nhau, không được tách.
  • Đúng: Who looks after her? 
  • Sai: Who looks her after?
  • come up with → nghĩ ra ý tưởng
  • get rid of → loại bỏ
  • get on with → hòa hợp với ai
  • put up with → chịu đựng
  • look forward to → mong chờ

 Để sử dụng Phrasal Verb nhuần nhuyễn, không có một công thức nào cả mà bạn bắt buộc phải ghi nhớ từng cụm.
